About HKU and CAES

The Centre for Applied English Studies (CAES) under the Faculty of Arts is a leading centre for teaching and scholarship in academic literacy. We provide English for Academic and Specific Purposes (EAP and ESP) courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students across all disciplines at HKU. We also run a well-established Masters in Applied Linguistics (MAAL) and co-run a Masters in TESOL (MATESOL) with the Faculty of Education as well as supervise PhD students in the field of Applied Linguistics. We also have many years of experience providing training programmes for university and school teachers and staff.

The Teacher Professional Development Programme in Teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) provides participants with a good foundation and solid understanding of the current principles and practices of teaching and learning in the field of EAP. The programme offers participants a unique opportunity to meet professional EAP teachers, develop professional networks and advance their pedagogical knowledge and teaching skills.

The Teacher Professional Development Programme in Teaching EAP is delivered by a team of experienced full-time teachers at CAES who have specialist knowledge and skills of teaching and researching EAP and ESP. Many have PhDs and are also teachers on our MAAL and/or MATESOL programmes and have extensive experience in training teachers.

Dates and Venue

The programme is scheduled to take place on campus at The University of Hong Kong from 29 May to 2 June 2023 (Monday - Friday). All morning and afternoon sessions will be conducted in face-to-face format.

Assessment and Certificate

This is a 30-hour, one-week, intensive programme. You will have timetabled sessions in the morning and afternoon every day of the programme. In some evenings, you may be asked to complete reflective and preparatory tasks. There is no assessment. However, you will receive feedback on the tasks you have completed during the programme. On completion of the programme, you will be awarded a certificate of completion in Teaching English for Academic Purposes.
